Dear Red Bridge Families,

We look forward to hosting you for a Halloween parade tomorrow afternoon. Please meet at Crane Cove Park at 3:30pm to see students walk in costume and hear a couple of Halloween songs. All students will need to be picked up from the park by 4pm. Students are welcome to wear their costumes to school tomorrow. Please ensure costumes are not too gruesome, can be worn comfortably and are culturally sensitive.  Please don't send any treats for the class on Halloween. We will provide a pizza lunch (plain, cheese pizza) for students. Please pack a snack and water bottle, and if your child does not like pizza, you are welcome to pack lunch as normal.

Happy Halloween!
Orly

Week 9 Recap

It’s hard to believe that we are already nearing the end of the first term! Bridge Day was certainly a highlight of this term for AL3. We were proud to contribute to the community celebration by creating two paper-mache piñatas to reflect the student-selected theme of cute animals. The adorable blue bear and the charming red fox were almost too cute to destroy…almost! In addition to the piñata fun, we enjoyed lunch on the beach, a coastal hike, and giving back to the community by picking up trash. Students also sketched the Golden Gate Bridge to honor the namesake of our school.

In Critical Thinking and World Studies (CT/WS), AL3 has continued to explore our state of California through our BIG questions:

  • How did people come to California?

  • Who belongs here?

  • Who decides who belongs here?

Thank you for your contributions to our family interview project. We shared the stories with each other and created a Padlet map to track the stories of migration to our state. Take a look at our map here and feel free to add to our posts. The site allows you to add photos/video/artifacts, if you have any, which would make the stories even more meaningful. After exploring our own family stories of migration/immigration, we recognized that we do not represent all identity groups who have come to California over time so we expanded our research to learn from other resources. We read the book Dreamers by Yuri Morales and Landed by Millie Lee. AL3 students also explored immigrant stories collected in a project from KQED (PBS/Public Radio for Northern California). Another highlight of our study was a virtual tour of the Angel Island Immigration Station.

As we near the end of the term, AL3 students are designing their final mural project to visually represent the concepts they learned through our study. Last week, we took a walk in the Dogpatch neighborhood to view several murals that are just a few blocks away. Students were specifically looking at how images, symbols, and colors communicate ideas in murals. This week, each AL3 student will paint a final mural and write a reflection to explain how their mural communicates their learning about belonging and people who have come to California. If your family would like to explore this topic further, consider a family field trip to visit Angel Island or take an artist guided tour of the murals in the Mission through Precita Eyes.

Red Bridge is preparing for our first Deep Dive of the year! In the final two weeks of the term we will pause our usual schedule to spend our days digging deep into learning about one specific topic. AL3 has chosen the topic of the Brain and Emotions. For AL3, the process will be different from other Autonomy Levels in that they will expand their study across the entire 2nd term. During the Deep Dive weeks, AL3 students will spend their days in the research and information gathering phase. Each student will also develop their own focus question(s). The Deep Dive weeks will end with AL3 creating a project proposal that will carry through Term 2. At the end of the term, each student will be responsible for sharing an oral presentation of their learning during the community showcase. Families will be invited to this event (more information to come).

Deep Dive Resources Needed! A component of the AL3 deep dive will be connecting with an expert. Please let me know if you have any contacts in the following fields:

  • Neuroscience

  • Imaging (We’d love to see a real MRI!)

  • Psychology

  • Anyone else who may be able to support our study of brain and emotions

Also, if your family has any books or other resources on these topics that you’d be willing to share, please send them to school with your child. Thank you!

In the past few weeks, our community had several other fun experiences. Last Friday, students earned their first Learning Credit, The Curious Questioner! We gathered in mixed Autonomy Level groups with the goal of asking 100 questions about a piece of art. Students WAY exceeded this goal and earned their first 2022 community learning credit! Next week, we will launch additional learning credits for students to pursue individually. This Friday, we had our first ever “Shake it Up” lunch where we went to eat lunch on the beach side at Crane Cove Park, listened to fun music, and encouraged students to “shake it up” and talk with/sit with students in other autonomy levels who they may not know as well. This was quite fun and a great way to connect so we hope to continue this as a monthly tradition.

Looking forward to a fantastic end of our first term together!
Jenny
